By land…by sea…even by air…we never take off on a venture without one or more of our RV toys. More often then not, we rely on this equipment to discover and experience various locations. Our most frequently used pieces are scuba diving equipment, pedal bikes, inflatable boat, and hiking gear. Other equipment seldom used but things we don’t have it in our heart to quite part with are a kite, metal detector, sled, and clam gun.
Sure, there is always the option of renting said equipment instead of hauling it to each destination, but the price tag of renting can get steep and knowing the condition and function of our toys not only gives us piece of mind but it allows us more time to do what we strive to do on our travels, enjoy every minute of the adventure! If we can’t find room to store them in our basement compartments, we keep them tied to our motorhome carrier during travel mode.
Scuba Gear
Scuba diving is a big part of our travels! Levi is a certified open water scuba instructor ,and I am open water certified. We have accumulated a variety of diving equipment through the years with classes and as equipment wears down. We carry our own tanks so the cost of diving in any location has come down to tank fills (about $5 each). We opt for shore dives more so than chartered boat dives, also. Our only boat dive (in Michigan) was a few bucks for gas.
Our diving adventures have not been as numerous as desired; so far we have splashed into underwater wonders like Lake Tahoe and Lake Huron.
Pedal Bikes
We ended up selling our speedy scooter and purchasing pedal bikes after a year on the road. It was getting to be to much paperwork hauling around a scooter we fired up every four months; plus many of our destinations had Rails-to-Trails or citywide bike paths. Levi bought a cruiser, I opted for a mountain bike, and Brewy got a bike trailer! Whether its biking around an open field and stream or dodging sun rays through the forest, a little ride is the best way to see more of your surroundings, take in some fresh air, and work those muscles (especially if Brewy’s trailer is attached to your bike)!
Inflatable Boat
There are a number of portable boats on the market. We purchased ours at a sporting goods store within the first few months of purchasing our motorhome. With the inflatable canoe, we also purchased life jackets and a water proof container, just in case. We typically take the boat out to small inland lakes, nothing treacherous. It’s for those lazy sunny days at the lake or a little rowing challenge, maybe a BBQ to follow. We are missing the fishing poles though.
Hiking Gear
Our hiking equipment is not Appalachian Trail approved, but its enough to sustain us for a day’s hike. Our good hiking boots and backpacks crammed with compasses, mini first aid kits, snacks (human and canine), water, and maps gets us in and back from our wilderness sightseeing.

I have been thinking about getting an inflatable canoe/raft. We also have a trailer for our dog that we pull behind the bikes. Everyone gets a kick out of seeing us chauffeur our Chihuahua-terrier mix around in her “chariot”.
Fortunately, there are so many portable boats on the market now with so many features to fit your needs and wants! We love our pet carrier too…our dog wanted nothing to do with it when we first got it…now she jumps right in and enjoys the ride:) Thanks for commenting!

Like you, we have to have our toys too but living in a truck camper it is a little more of a challenge:) We have a fold up (PortaBote) with a trolling motor/small 4 HP and several fishing rods. Our hiking equipment is all focused on one day hikes now versus the multi day trips. Our two bikes are in a front receiver hitch and we love to stop in towns that have beautiful trails along rivers, etc. In three years the only toys we’ve really gleaned are our backpacks, sleeping bags, etc.
