Working at a Christmas Tree Lot: Part One

Two weeks of rest after finishing off a season as pumpkin lot managers and we are back at it again as Christmas tree lot managers.  We are located at the same lot and continue to work with the same company.  Set up was a bit different this time around as we already had the tent and overall lot framework ready for merchandise.  We switched orange and silver streamers for red and green ones and displayed a couple of “Fresh Christmas Tree” banners.  Our 30 foot jack-o-lantern blow up was replaced with an even larger Frosty the Snowman.

Trucks from Michigan, Washington state, and Canada came to drop off all species of trees.  A crew showed up to unload and stack the deliveries.  Not counting the already over 200 trees we have sold within the first week, we have over 900 trees sitting on our lot waiting to be taken home.

Setting up the trees has been a much more labor intensive job than the pumpkins.  With this particular company, we don’t hire the help.  Instead the owner assigns and schedules help on the busier days, typically the weekends.  This takes the hassle out of interviewing and training, but we don’t have help everyday.  We take every opportunity to finish what needs to be done when extra hands are here.

As far as routines go, setting up trees in stands and pricing is a morning ritual.  We help customers choose their special tree based on their specifications (height, width, species, fullness, etc.).  I take their money and Levi throws the tree on their car before lassoing it on.  Yes, Levi does most of the lifting and is quite sore.    Check out Part One  of our Tree Lot Series!
