Working at a Pumpkin Lot: Week 3

This week’s pumpkin patch theme is Feeling Hot, Hot, Hot! The temperatures have been in the 90s and humid but that hasn’t stopped the customers from clamoring at the counter to buy their pumpkins for the season! Between checking out customers, helping load hay in the back of trucks, throwing away rotting pumpkins, giving train rides to the kiddos, and general lot maintenance, there is little time to just sit and take a breather.  With all our success, we have run into a few snags with our train going kaput and finding out that there is such a thing as water logging a mum. It’s typically slow in the mornings so a few times during the week one of us will run an errand or two…taking care of a load or two at the laundromat down the road, replenishing groceries, or grabbing a bite to eat at one of the many restaurants nearby.  Here’s this week’s episode of our adventures workamping at a pumpkin lot.  You can view previous episodes here, Week 1 and Week 2.

Week 3: 10/1/18 to 10/7/18

Monday: Pricing and fixing displays is an endless task. We price the pumpkins based on their size and condition and write the price on the pumpkin with a permanent marker.  At checkout, we make sure to tell the customers that they can take off the price using rubbing alcohol. Customers trickled in throughout the day to buy mums, lots of hay bales, corn stocks and of course pumpkins!

Tuesday: More customers…more pricing…We started rotating the pumpkins throughout the day since the sun was beating down on them. That’s a chore in itself considering we have easily over 500 heavy jack-o-lanterns and the sun is equally beating down on us too…sunscreen anyone?

Wednesday: Sleep, eat, sell, maintain lot, eat, sleep, and repeat.

Thursday: Our tractor to pull the kiddie train came in. Levi went around the lot mowing the overgrown grass and used a weed eater for the tighter spots.

Friday: The train cars were power washed, the wheels were changed, and the train was assembled.  We were able to give our first train ride that night.

Saturday: The tractor broke down and Levi spent a good part of the morning fixing it with another worker while I managed the lot.  Once the train was up and running, we had kids ready to ride!

Sunday: More train rides, more sales, and then the mum debacle.  We had our flowers sitting in small pools this whole week not realizing that they needed to be drained…oh no!  We over watered them, and many were looking rather peaked.  Now begins the rescue mission…

Till next week….
